Wildfires burned thousands of acres of north Texas yesterday, wiping out whole small towns and rural areas. The local NPR station tonight interviewed one man who spoke of just loading up his family and their dog in the car and making a run for it. Then this miserable excuse for a human being said "We just took the cats and threw them out of the house to fend for themselves. They probably just got scared and ran back in, though."

WTF? You threw them out to "fend for themselves"? You took off in your car to get away, what did you expect they were going to do? Outrun the flames? There were no streams, no bodies of water even to take refuge in. What did you expect they were going to do except die horribly in fear and pain while you and your dogs ran away? Do you not even think?

People make me despair sometimes. Those poor kitties!

People are stupid when it comes to cats. Someone dumped a declawed male ginger out at Grapevine Lake for who knows what reason. Dogs, coyotes, human beings, there are all sorts of things out there that could have hurt him. We only know about his particular story because we adopted him this evening.

and then there's the story of the couple who died in their truck while their son ran back in to grab the cat in the cat carrier. Sadly, there's a reason rescue teams say to leave pets behind.

I can understand if he said "We just had time to grab the kids and prayed the pets would be OK", or "We loaded up the dogs, but we couldn't find the cats". But they not only had time to load up the dogs, they actually had the cats in their hands, and instead of carrying them to the car, they just threw them them out into the yard to "fend for themselves". That's what I can't understand.

cause dogs will ride in cars without freaking out? *shrug* I dunno. I think it sucks too.

It's from an "average human being", what part did you think would make sense? (Can you tell I don't think much of the "average people" in this society right now? )
